Sister Diane Capuano’s Thoughts on the Trip to El Salvador
“From January 2nd through 11th, I had the privilege of journeying with Michelle Martin, the Campus Minister at Molloy College; Terry, the Resident Life Director; four students and three alumni of Molloy to one of our favorite places in the world- El Salvador.
We once again assisted our Sister Flor Buruca in running two camps for the children in the villages of Sol Naciente and Once. This was the first time we worked in the community of Once. Like Sol Naciente, we fell immediately in love with the children and the people in the community.
Our small group of 10 did an outstanding job in operating two camps simultaneously in the two villages. We divided into two groups of five and alternated villages, each group spending two days in each village. On the fifth day of camp, both communities were combined and went on a field trip to a Children’s Museum in San Salvador which is a four hour bus ride from Sol Naciente! What a joy to watch the children enjoying each activity in the museum and then time in a park next to the museum. On the sixth day of the camp, both communities came together in Sol Naciente for Mass and then an afternoon “fiesta!” A grand time was had by all! Finally, on the seventh day, we went to each community to say a very emotional goodbye to our friends.
Due to the pandemic, Dominican College which usually joins us on this trip, did not participate this year. We are hoping they will continue in this unique and beautiful collaboration of sisters, Dominican Young Adult (DYA) members and young people in 2023.” – Sister Diane Capuano, OP
